This “panorama plan,” developed by Büro Berrel Gschwind in Basel, takes a new and unique look at the life and work of J. P. Hebel.
Starting in Basel, the view extends far beyond the place where he was born on May 10, 1760, and to which he remained connected throughout his life.
Across the neighboring Markgräflerland region, we follow the Wiese river via Weil am Rhein, Lörrach with Röttler Castle, Schopfheim and Hausen im Wiesental
to its source at Feldberg and turn via Belchen, Blauen, and Freiburg to Karlsruhe and Schwetzingen, where he died on September 22, 1826.

The map contains not only many stations from Hebel's life, but also allusions to his poems and calendar stories.
There is a lot to discover, both in reality and virtually – on the one hand by following this map in your mind,
and on the other hand in reality,
as intended by the original, which was created for the “Kulturstadtplan #2, Johann Peter Hebel”
(Cultural City Map #2, Johann Peter Hebel) and encourages walks in Basel and the surrounding area –
perhaps with one of Hebel's works in hand. You can also do this here —
by clicking on the categories on the home page of our website – where you will find almost everything Hebel ever wrote.
No library or other website offers such a complete overview of his work. More than 2,000 texts —
some just short quotes, notes, and sentences, others multi-page letters and longer stories, and of course all his well-known poems —
can transport you into the world of Hebel and his time for hours on end.
Particularly noteworthy: his enlightened impetus, his humanity, his pedagogy without a raised index finger,
but always with humor (and a bit of mischief) have lost none of their validity and relevance to this day.
This is entirely in keeping with Johann Peter Hebel's philosophy: “It's wonderful to mix something vagabond-like into life!”

You can easily enlarge the map by clicking on the image above (and likewise click on the enlarged image to return to this size).
