51. Destruction of the Ten Tribes.
Twelve kings reigned
after Ahab in the kingdom of the ten tribes. But Israel was not reformed;
idolatry continued. Wickedness became rampant. How can a country be
happy, how can a land exist, how can a place, how can a house exist
where wickedness reigns supreme and no warning is heeded? More than once,
the Syrians devastated this beautiful country. It was still possible to
get along with the Syrians. After them came the Assyrians, a mighty
people of war, and made the land submissive and susceptible to interest.
King Hosea wanted to get back at the Assyrians, and was the last to do
so. The king of Assyria came with a hostile army, conquered Samaria and
carried away the king and almost all the inhabitants of the land into
captivity. Their name is no more among the nations. Gentiles came into
the desolate settlements and occupied them. The few who remained behind
united with them and were called Samaritans from that time on.
