52. The Journey to Emmaus.

On that Sunday two disciples went together to Emmaus, a village near Jerusalem. They were not of the eleven, but they talked together about these events and were sad. They already knew that the women had found the tomb empty and that angels had spoken to them. But they did not yet have much faith in the resurrection. Then the Risen One came to them, not in his familiar form, his face was not revealed to them, and joined them, as travellers on the road sometimes do. ‘What are these words,’ he asked them, ‘that you are exchanging with one another, and why are you so sad?’ The disciples began to trust the stranger who was with them. They said to him, ‘Are you the only one among the strangers in Jerusalem who does not know what has happened in these days?’ They thought that all people must know and all think about what made them so sad and lay so heavy in their hearts. He asked them what they meant. He wanted to give them the opportunity to lighten their hearts by sharing. They said: "That of Jesus, who was a prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and all men. Our priests,‘ they said, ’delivered him up to death, that he might be crucified. But we hoped that he would redeem Israel." Then he began to explain to them from the writings of Moses and the prophets that Christ had to suffer these things so that he could enter into his glory.

The disciples felt so at ease in their hearts at these words. A marvellous love for this friendly stranger stirred in their hearts. They would not have liked it when they came to Emmaus if he had gone any further. They said to him: "Stay with us! For it is getting dark and the day is getting late." Jesus gladly stayed with them. But when they were together in the inn and sitting at table, he broke bread, gave thanks and gave it to them. Then they recognised that it was he by the way he used to break bread. But just as they were about to rejoice and talk to him, he disappeared from them. Then they looked at each other, and one said to the other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?’ They hurried back to Jerusalem that same evening to tell the other disciples what had happened to them.
