41. The Widow's Mite.
In the last days
before his death, Jesus once sat opposite the treasury of the temple as
people were putting their gifts into it. Many rich people passed by and
laid down great gifts worthy of their wealth. But among them came a poor
widow in a poor garment and also put in two mites, as much as a penny.
She did not believe that anyone was paying attention to her, as he who
dwells in heaven pays attention to everything. But Jesus did not
overlook it and set a higher value on this small offering of pious
poverty than on the great gifts of wealth. He said to his disciples:
‘Truly I tell you: This poor widow has put in more than all the others.
For all the others have contributed of their substance. But this one,
out of her poverty, has put in all she had; she has put in all her food.’
