34. Of the Permanence of earthly Things.
But so many pious
people on earth are poor and unhappy, and so many wicked people are rich
and live gloriously and joyfully every day. No one lives by having many
possessions. There was a rich man whose field had yielded well. Then he
thought to himself, "What will I do? I do not have enough room where to
gather my fruit. This is what I will do: I will break down my
storehouses and build larger ones, and I will gather into them all that
I have grown and all my goods, and I will say to my soul, 'You have a
great store for many years. Rest now, eat and drink, and be of good
cheer." But God said to him: ‘You fool; this night your soul will be
required of you, and whose will it be that you have gathered?’ So poor
is the man who gathers treasures for himself and is not rich in God.
