31. Of the good Samaritan.
A scribe asked Jesus:
‘Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’ The question was a
good one. Jesus said to him, ‘What is written in the law? How do you
read?’ The scribe answered: ‘You shall love your Lord God with all your
heart, with all your soul, with all your strength and with all your mind;
and your neighbour as yourself.’ The answer was also good. Jesus said to
him: ‘Do this and you will live.’ The scribe wanted to justify himself.
He was ashamed that he should have asked a question that he and every
child could answer for themselves. So he went on to ask: ‘Who is my
neighbour?’ Jesus answered him: ‘A man went from Jerusalem to Jericho
and fell among the murderers. The murderers stripped him, beat him and
left him half dead. A priest was going down that road, saw him and
passed by. A Levite came to the place, saw him and passed by. A
Samaritan also came there, and when he saw the wounded man, he felt
sorry for him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds. He took him on
his animal and led him to an inn and nursed him. The next day, as he
travelled on, he paid the innkeeper and said to him, ‘Take care of him
further, and if it will cost a little more, I will pay you when I come
back.’
