26. The Clarification of Jesus.
Of all the Lord's
disciples, Peter, James and John were his most intimate. Once he took
them with him to a high mountain to show them something of his glory. On
the mountain he was transfigured before their eyes. His face shone like
the sun, and his clothes became white as the light. Moses and Elijah
appeared and talked with him. The good disciples felt so well. They
could never have left the Mount of Transfiguration. Peter said: ‘Lord,
it is good to be here. If you want, we will build three tents, one for
you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’ But while he was still speaking,
a bright cloud came over them, and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is
my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; him you shall hear.’ The
disciples were terrified and fell to the ground, as beautiful and
heavenly as the words were that the voice spoke. But Jesus touched them
and said: ‘Get up! Do not be afraid!’ But when they lifted up their eyes,
they saw only Jesus; they no longer saw Moses and Elijah. It was almost
a fleeting moment in which they saw his transfiguration. On the way home
he forbade them to say anything to anyone about this apparition until he
had risen from the dead. So the three disciples saw something of the
glory of Jesus as the earthly eye could perceive it. But he glorified
himself even more in his love, in his continued charitable deeds and in
his pleasing teachings about heaven.
