21. The Kinship of Jesus.
Jesus taught these
and other things. Once when he was teaching and many people were sitting
around him, his mother and brothers came and wanted to talk to him.
Someone from the crowd said to him, ‘Your mother and brothers are
outside asking about you.’ Jesus said, ‘Who is my mother and who are my
brothers?’ With these words he stretched out his hand over his disciples
and said, ‘Behold, this is my mother, and these are my brothers. For
whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister
and mother.’ On another occasion, a woman was so moved by his words that
she exclaimed with a loud voice: ‘Blessed is the womb that bore you and
the breasts that you suckled.’ This means that Mary was a happy mother
because she had such a son. Her beautiful hope that all her children's
children would call her blessed was already fulfilled. No doubt Jesus
took great joy in the fact that his mother was so happily praised,
honoured and loved for his sake. But he said: ‘Yes, blessed are those
who hear and keep the word of God.’
