20. The Parable of
the Sower.
While this terrible
sin was being committed against John, Jesus continued to invite people
into the holy and blessed kingdom of God. At the same time, much good is
quietly promoted among people by God's Spirit, when at the same time the
enemy of good is creating much evil. Why are there so many evil people
in the world? Why do they not all follow the invitation to the holy and
blessed kingdom of God? Jesus often presented his teachings in beautiful
parables and stories. Children also like to hear parables and stories.
A sower went out to sow his seed - and as he sowed, some seed fell on
the path, and the birds ate it. Some fell on the stone corn, which did
not have so much soil, and soon sprouted because it did not go deep into
the ground. But when the sun went out, it withered, and because it had
no root, it withered away. Some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang
up with them and choked them. Some fell into good soil and bore fruit
thirtyfold, sixtyfold and a hundredfold.
What does this parable mean? How does Jesus explain it to his disciples?
The seed is the word of God, the teaching. The sower sows the word.
Some fell on the way. Some people hear the word, the teachings and
admonitions of Jesus, and do not take them to heart. The word is lost to
his heart. It cannot bear fruit. A lot of things fell on the stony
ground. Some people accept the word with joy. But it does not take root.
They are fickle. For a while they believe. Afterwards, when tribulation
comes, they fall away. Some fell among thorns. Some people hear the word.
But in their hearts lie earthly cares and the lust of life and choke the
good seed. That is why there are still so many evil people in the world
and not all follow the invitation into the holy and blessed kingdom of
God. But some have fallen on good soil. This means those who receive the
word and keep it in a fine, good heart and bear good fruit according to
their ability.
What does a child want to take away from this parable and its
interpretation? Is not the school like such a field? Doesn't Jesus touch
tender hearts with many a beautiful saying and sow the word? What is the
state of my heart? Keep me, my God, from carelessness, from recklessness,
from evil desires! Preserve in me a fine and good heart! May my life be
fruitful in good intentions and deeds!
